A Dream Turned into an Ever Evolving Reality
The land was and is called Deer Shelter Rock, and the house is both on and in the limestone bluff it sits on — the sunken orange-and-brown living rooms straight out of Austin Powers are lined with actual trees and actual rock faces. The "House" and its surrounding warehouses take several hours to walk through, even at a brisk pace. Unlike a museum, there aren't clearly marked ways to visit the sections you have interests in—you are on a set path through the entire collection of collections. Many collections have no labeling because they were previously labeled originals when in fact they are reproductions. Alex Jordan’s awesome retreat built atop a chimney of rock opened to the public in 1960. The House on the Rock is a surreal, sometimes nightmarish journey through what feels like a mad man’s strange and obsessive imagination. Construction on the bizarre attraction began when Alex Jordan Jr. decided to built a house atop Deer Shelter Rock on land he didn’t even own at the time.

Before his falling out with Jordan, Every created many of the displays, including the carousel. That being said, the House on the Rock didn’t start out as a tourist attraction. Jordan fell in love with the land as a young man, eventually buying the property from a farm family, the Christiansons.
